2009 League Review
by Philip Bell, Umpires Rep - CCA
The Cyprus Cricket League came to an end Sunday 1 November with the Sri Lankan team from Nicosia being crowned champions again, winning the league by a clear margin with 147 points from a possible maximum of 160 but with 5 chasing teams being within 10 points of each other so providing the league with interest to the very end with teams trying for points to push themselves up the league.
The Sri Lankans were worthy champions winning 7 of their 8 games only losing to the joint second placed team WSBA.
Their batsmen scoring plenty of runs quickly and a well organized bowling and fielding team supporting each other. An example to the other teams in the league on how to play and win at cricket!
Joint 2nd were WSBA and Amdocs both teams from Limassol both on 119 points, Fellows of Nicosia 3rd with 114, Moufflons of Limassol on 110 points and the newcomers Bangladesh of Paphos a well deserved and creditable 109 points.
The bottom 3 teams Flames and Kings Punjab from Nicosia College's with 87 and 72 respectively and Ay Nic on 73 points.
The outstanding all round player of the season was Kapila who is a Cyprus National Team player who starred with his controlled batting holding his team together on many occasions and then his slow left arm bowling if not taking wickets stopping the opposition batsmen scoring runs.
Cyprus Cricket is also very grateful to the British Military for the use of the pitches at Happy Valley, Ay Nic, Akrotiri and the UN Ground at Nicosia for the use of their excellent grounds and look forward to the 2010 season to continue to improve cricket on the island.
A successful season for Cyprus Cricket, winning the Division 4 Championships, a successful league program and new pitches to play on, cricket on the island is really on the up with many new players joining the league teams and with young players coming through.
Cyprus Cricket are also looking for more teams, players and officials to join the league in 2010 and more details can be found at www.cypruscricket.com or contact Muhammad on 99309599.
