Sri Lankans CC vs
European University Flames
October 18, 2009 – UN Ground Nicosia
This Sunday's
only game was played at the UN Ground Nicosia between the defending champions
Sri Lankan Cricket Club and the European University Flames. Flames won the toss
and elected to field first to take advantage of the unreliable Flicx pitch and make first use of the rough outfield.
The pitch
proved to be very quick and unpredictable but that didn't stop Sampath Tsangarides and Danuka Agathocleous having an
opening stand of 91 runs in 13 overs before Sampath Tsangarides (37) was out
going for yet another big hit. Kapila Wickram then came in and proved his class with a very
controlled innings of 30 runs - straight drives on anything pitched up and
pouncing on anything short.
Manjula Kandage replaced Kapila Wickram and continued the onslaught with a very quick and
powerful 38 runs including 4 sixes. In the meantime, Danuka
Agathocleous kept scoring away and finished with 84
runs and received good support from Anju Mathews, who
contributed vital 40 runs.
A rather dispirited Flames dropped a number of catches and had plenty of fielding
lapses and as a result the Sri Lankans’ ended up with
291 runs for 7 wickets in allotted 40 overs.
A fired up Roshan Kankanamge opened the
bowling for the Sri Lankan’s and Flames found the
aggressive approach too arduous and quickly found themselves 2 wickets down for
7 runs on the board after Roshan’s first spell.
Flames
middle order provided a brief resistance; however, once Kapila
Wickram removed two batsmen in an over the Flames
collapsed and eventually were extinguished for a lowly 79 runs all out. Kapila Wickram taking a very controlled 4 wickets for 10 runs and Roshan Kankanamge finishing with
3 wickets for 35 runs - with 2 run outs from a competent fielding display.
Sri Lankans CC 291/7 - 20 points
Flames 79
all out - 4 points
