The CCA organised a 6 a side competition at Aphrodite Hills Tennis Courts; four teams entered (Amdocs, Episcopi Lions, Foley School and Moufflons) and, as this was a new format to most players, there were some puzzled looking cricketers that arrived at the large hotel and property complex's tennis courts.
Playing conditions were quickly agreed amongst the captains; five overs per innings, hitting the fence straight ahead on the full was 6, hitting the ground first was 4. There were no LBWs but catching off the fence would be out. Hitting over the fence was out. Wides (and bowling action no-balls) were left to "umpire's discretion".
Play started shortly after 2pm with Episcopi Lions vs Amdocs; the Lions electing to bat first.
Initially players were getting used to the new playing style; fielders had to be aware that there was a fence behind them and playing straight was essential - there were no "easy" nurdles to third man.
Umpire, Phil Bell, was put on the spot soon after start of play when the ball "stuck" in the fence and a fielder grabbed it and appealed. Phil rose to the occasion; a few seconds thought, then "not out".
As no-one had played this style of cricket before, there was little feel for a "par" score; Episcopi posted 46 with Andy Mulkern playing well. Was this a good score? It turned out to be too good for Amdocs and, in fact, was the second highest score of the day.
As the games proceeded, fielding and bowling became tighter, scores became lower and games were closer. However there was an ominous black cloud on the horizon and rain started to fall - play continued gamely on, but after 5 minutes it became torrential and players and spectators ran for cover.
After 30 minutes, the rain had died down enough for play to resume under a rainbow.
As the sun set around 4:30, the tennis court floodlights were switched on. As ever with artificial light, the "twilight" period, before the lights fully took affect made seeing the ball difficult for the fielders.
By the time of the final game (Moufflons v Amdocs), Moufflons and Epi Lions had won 2 games, Amdocs had won 1; so it was all to play for; could Amdocs win and force a 1 over play off or would Moufflons continue their 100% record and win outright?
Thanks to cool headed batting by Rubel and Tony of Moufflons and tight bowling and fielding by the whole Moufflons team, they held their nerve and won the game and the competition.
All the games were played in good spirit and thanks to the CCA; and particularly to Brian and Phil for scoring and umpiring in the rain. Quote of the day from Muhammad: "I can see lightning on the hills; oh no, it's a plane." In fact, it was a wind farms' lights.
