The tennis courts and football pitches at Limassol's Heritage School made a wonderful sight on a Wednesday in June when they were full of young cricketers taking part in a tournament organised by the Cyprus Cricket Association as the culmination of cricket coaching courses which they had provided at several schools during the spring.

With four games going on simultaneously all afternoon, CCA were indebted to the army of volunteers assembled by Phil Bell to manage and umpire the matches, and grateful to the Heritage School for the use of the impressive facilities.

Two competitions took place - for junior boys and junior girls - competed for by four schools, with eight boys teams and five girls teams participating. There were some talented players on view, and plenty of effort, enthusiasm and enjoyment.

The boys were divided into two groups. In the first group American Academy A beat Aspire, Heritage A and Silverline A to top the table, with Heritage A in second place. The other group saw Heritage B win low-scoring games against Silverline B and American Academy B and C. American Academy B finished second in the group.

In the final American Academy A beat Heritage B by 13 runs to claim the title. They were made to fight hard by both Heritage teams before taking the winners' trophy back to Larnaka.

The girls' teams all played in one group, with mixed results, with the exception of Heritage who won all their games to take the title, with Silverline A the runners-up. American Academy achieved some high scores, with one batter hitting sixes that Freddie Flintoff would have been proud of!

CCA Chairman Muhammad Husain, before presenting the trophies and medals to winners and runners-up, thanked the schools for taking part, the volunteers for their help, and the Heritage School for use of the pitches. He expressed pleasure at seeing so many children enjoying playing cricket and hoped that more such events could be held in the future.
